I notice her at church In the light blue shirt Bouncing her newborn Up and down Her lips lift into a smile Above his sleepy brown eyes Before she presses a kiss Upon his brow I glimpse her in the park After he learns how to walk Clutching tightly to His tiny hand She pauses mid stride Plucks a flower from the ground Then tucks it tenderly Behind his ear I watch her in the store Her cart bursting with food Chasing her son’s laughter Throughout the aisles She reaches into her pack Grabs his favorite snack Beckoning him to keep closer For a while I spot her at the library Books stacked in her lap The growing child Nestled into her side Together they learn How to sound out the words Until he can read The stories himself I study her at school Beside the nervous boy Entering his classroom For the very first time She ruffles his hair Offers a whispered prayer And snaps a picture so She’ll always remember I find her in the car With the sunglasses on Hiding tears that Betray her smile Her baby once small Now grows tall Needing her less with Each day that remains
